US President Donald Trump said Washington had “very good” negotiations with Tehran. According to him, the parties “quite possibly” will be able to reach an agreement in the near future and end the conflict. He said this on May 6 at a press conference at the White House, transmits DW.
“They want to make a deal,” he told reporters at the White House. “We have had very good negotiations over the last 24 hours and it is quite possible that we will reach an agreement.”
Trump noted that the negotiation process, in his assessment, is developing successfully, but warned: if the United States does not achieve its goals, Washington will have to “take a big step further.” At the same time, as Trump emphasized, Iran is interested in the deal.
The American president also claims that Tehran has agreed to a key US demand – to abandon the development of nuclear weapons. US President also made it clearthat the 30-day deadline for reaching an agreement, which the American media wrote about, is not rigid. Answering questions from journalists, he said that “there are no deadlines.”
Iranian authorities have not yet commented on this statement.
This is not the first time Trump has said that Iran allegedly agreed never to possess nuclear weapons and also accept “different conditions.” At the same time, his administration still hardly discloses the content of the negotiations, although Trump himself and other American officials regularly talk about their successful progress.
Despite the fact that the White House continues to allow a “forceful option” for solving the problem, publicly in Washington they express confidence that it will not come to that.
Earlier, Axios, citing sources in the White House, wrote that the United States and Iran are close to signing a “one-page memorandum of understanding.” The document should become a peace agreement between the parties and the basis for further negotiations. The memorandum provides for a 30-day negotiation period, during which the parties must agree on additional agreements on the Strait of Hormuz, the Iranian nuclear program and American sanctions. The White House expects Iran to sign the document by the end of the week.
Iranian authorities said they were studying the US proposal to end the war and would soon send a response through Pakistan, which is acting as a mediator between Washington and Tehran.
