On May 15, the police received a report of vandalism against the sculpture Sassuma Arnaa in Nuup Saava. But without witnesses or information from people who saw something, the case cannot be investigated further. The municipality had not discovered the damage either.
There was a big celebrationwhen artist Christian Rosing’s stone sculpture Sassuma Arnaa was unveiled in 2007. But after almost 19 years, the sculpture has been vandalized. Unknown perpetrators have poured purple paint on the work.
The police confirm that they have received a report about the vandalism.
– We received a report on Friday 15 May at 16:55, says duty manager Malik Olesen to Sermitsiaq.
Although two weeks have now passed since the report, the investigation has stalled.
– Unfortunately, we cannot make much progress with the case because we lack evidence and witnesses, says Malik Olesen.
The police therefore hope that citizens who have seen something or have information about the vandalism will come forward. The police can be contacted on 70 14 48.
Will be cleaned on Friday
The mastermind behind Sassuma Arnaa is former municipal board member Vittus Holm. According to information, it has been at least two weeks since the stone sculpture was vandalized.
It is the municipality that is responsible for statues and sculptures in the city. But because the vandalism had not been discovered, the matter only became known when Sermitsiaq contacted the municipality on Thursday.
Subsequently, the municipality stated that the administration for facilities and the environment will try to remove the purple paint from Sassuma Arnaa on Friday.
