Journalism student Ivalu Nivi Johansen from Ilisimatusarfik is undertaking an international course at Denmark Media and Journalism College in Aarhus.

    – I would like to recommend others to take a stay abroad during their studies, if they have the opportunity. It is very empowering to test limits and put yourself in a situation you have not been in before, says Ivalu Nivi Johansen, who is currently doing a semester at DMJX in Aarhus.

There are 25 journalism students in class, and the common language is English. Because the students come from all over the world to complete the semester”Video journalism and foreign reporting” at the Danish School of Media and Journalism (DMJX) in Aarhus.

Among the students is 33-year-old Ivalu Nivi Johansen, who daily studies journalism at Ilisimatusarfik.

    – I am starting my 6th semester here in Aarhus, and it is very different from at home. In Nuuk there are 2 of us in the class, here we are 25. It is an international class, which means that there are students from France, China, the USA, Australia and several other countries. I am the only one from Greenland, says Ivalu Nivi Johansen and adds:

Ivalu Nivi Johansen is starting the 6th semester of the journalism degree. She takes it at DMJX in Aarhus, where they have an international course.

    ADVANTAGES OF A SEMESTER ABROAD

    – You will gain sought-after professional skills and competences.

    – You will get a professional profile that sets you apart from your fellow students.

    – You will get an international network.

    – You will learn a new way of solving problems You will learn to understand other cultures and perhaps learn a new language.

    – You will discover that what you think is normal can be the exact opposite in another country Living in another country and experiencing another culture is a memory for life.

    – In any case, it’s really exciting, and I get a good insight into how journalism students are trained and work all over the world.

During the semester, students must go through three courses, each of which ends with an exam. The first subject is international news articles, followed by video journalism and finally statistics and figures. In the final assignment, the students must then involve the three subjects in one project.

    A new beginning

Ivalu Nivi Johansen was born and raised in Nuuk, and has worked for 10 1/2 years in the cinema in Katuaq, before she decided to change gears and start training as a journalist.

It has opened up a world I didn’t know existed before

    Journalism student Ivalu Nivi Johansen

    – I have always been interested in news, so it was natural for me to apply for the programme. But when I started at Ilisimatusarfik, I never imagined that it would lead to me being here at DMJX in Aarhus today. Academically and mentally, I have taken so much with me already. It is very empowering to test limits and put yourself in a situation you have not been in before and which you may not be comfortable with. It has opened up a world I didn’t know existed before, says Ivalu Nivi Johansen.

    – I would recommend everyone else to travel during their studies if they have the opportunity. I want to see even more of the world. Maybe I can get out and make some documentaries. I could imagine that.

    English as the primary language

In addition to the academic and mental learning, Ivalu Nivi Johansen has also become much better at English.

    – It has been difficult at times, and I have had to practice a lot. But it’s totally worth it. I have gained so many new perspectives on the world.

Ivalu Nivi Johansen did an internship at KNR and would also like to work as a news journalist, perhaps at Sermitsiaq, when she graduates in January.
