El Aaiun (Occupied Territories), June 22, 2026 (SPS) – The Sahrawi League for the Protection of Sahrawi Prisoners in Moroccan Prisons has expressed deep concern over the deteriorating health condition of Sahrawi civilian prisoner Naama Asfari, who is currently on a hunger strike.
According to information relayed by the association from Asfari’s family, he remains determined to continue his open-ended hunger strike until his personal demands and those of his fellow Sahrawi prisoners in Moroccan prisons are met. He has reportedly rejected any attempts aimed merely at delaying action without achieving tangible progress on the ground.
The association strongly condemned what it described as the Moroccan occupation state’s policy of “turning a deaf ear” to the legitimate demands of Sahrawi civilian prisoners, arguing that it ignores their most basic human and legal rights.
It voiced serious concern regarding the health condition of the hunger-striking prisoner and appealed for urgent intervention and exerting effective pressure on the Moroccan authorities. It called for the immediate response to the prisoners’ demands, an end to policies of deprivation and medical neglect, and compliance with relevant international decisions.
In particular, the association referred to the 2023 opinion of the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, which called for the immediate release of the Gdeim Izik Group and all Sahrawi detainees held arbitrarily.
