    This was reported to Asia-Plus by the head of the public relations department of the Committee for Emergency Situations (CoES), Orif Nozimiyon. According to him, the body was found today, June 26, about 20 kilometers below the scene of the incident, during a search and rescue operation. In the same area the day before, a body was discovered, presumably that of the driver of the GBAO chairman.

    According to available information, relatives identified the deceased as Alisher Mirzonabot. Final confirmation of identity is expected after completion of the forensic examination.

    The search and rescue operation has been ongoing since the accident, when on June 17, the car in which the Chairman of the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region, Alisher Mirzonabot, and those accompanying him, fell into the Pyanj River. The bodies of Alisher Mirzonabot’s wife, daughter and assistant have not yet been found.

    More than 200 rescuers, employees of specialized units of the CoES, as well as representatives of other government agencies are involved in the search. Work is being carried out both on the surface of the water and under water in the Darvaz region, Shamsiddin Shokha region, Kulyab zone and in other areas along the river bed.

    Previously, June 25, CoES reported the discovery of a man’s body 20 kilometers from the accident site. At that time, the identity of the deceased was still being established. It was not specified whether the body found belonged to Mirzonabot himself, his driver, or another person.

    The Committee also reported that in addition to CoES rescuers and employees of other relevant departments, residents of the region are voluntarily participating in the search operation.

    The official car of Alisher Mirzonabot on the morning of June 17, returning from Dushanbe to Khorog, fell into the Pyanj River at the 282nd kilometer of the Dushanbe-Khorog highway, between the villages of Zigar and Yakhchisor in the Darvaz region.

    According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Tajikistan, the cause of the accident was excessive speed and loss of control by the driver over driving.

    According to the CoES, in the car were:

    • Alisher Mirzonabot – Chairman of GBAO;
    • Amina Amonulloeva (46 years old) – his wife;
    • Orifa Mirzonabotzoda (2 years old) – his daughter;
    • Sadonsho Dzhanobalisho (37 years old) – assistant to the chairman;
    • Sino Muborakshoev (42 years old) – driver.

    They all ended up in the water.

    The investigation into the incident is under the personal control of the President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon.

    Alisher Mirzonabot also served as deputy chairman of the Majlisi Milli Majlisi Oli of Tajikistan. The day before the tragedy, June 16, he took part in the next meeting of the upper house of parliament.

    Before his appointment as chairman of GBAO in 2021, Mirzonabot worked as deputy chairman of the State Committee for National Security of Tajikistan. He was born in the Rushansky district of GBAO.

    After the death of Alisher Mirzonabot, the duties of the head of the region were entrusted to his first deputy Sharifkhon Safarzoda.
