The Model Capability Initiative (MCI) system will run on work-related apps and websites and periodically capture the contents of employees’ screens.
The goal of this initiative is to improve the company’s artificial intelligence models in areas where human-computer interaction is difficult to replicate.
Company spokesman Andy Stone said data collected through MCI will not be used for performance evaluation or for any purpose other than training models.
“If we’re building agents that help people perform everyday tasks using computers, our models need real-world examples of how people actually use them—like mouse movements, button presses, and drop-down menu navigation,” Stone said.
Experts note that the use of keystroke recording technologies significantly expands the possibilities of data collection, transferring control over office employees to the format of constant real-time monitoring, previously typical mainly for couriers and temporary staff.
“There are no federal restrictions on worker surveillance in the United States,” said Ifeoma Ajunwa, a law professor at Yale University, adding that state laws require, at best, that workers be generally aware that employers are monitoring them.
European legislation would likely prohibit such monitoring, said Valerio De Stefano, a law professor at York University in Toronto who studies technology and comparative labor law.
In some countries, such as Italy, the use of electronic monitoring to track employee productivity is expressly prohibited by law, while in Germany, courts have ruled that employers can only use keystroke logging in exceptional cases, such as when a serious criminal offense is suspected.
