THE government decided to end the maintenance of time GMT+1 throughout the year. From the end of summer, the Morocco will return to his legal timecorresponding to the time zone GMT. The announcement was made Thursday by the head of government, Aziz Akhannouchat the end of the meeting of the Governing Council. According to him, this decision follows numerous requests made by citizens regarding the time system currently in force.
The head of government indicated that this question had been examined within the components of the government majoritynoting that maintaining the overtime hour had caused difficulties for part of the population, which led the Executive to opt for a return to the GMT time zone. He also stressed that this decision is the result of an evaluation of the effects of the current system, taking into account the observations and criticisms made in recent years.
In this sense, the Governing Council approved draft decree No. 2.26.530 relating to legal time. The text plans to delay the time by 60 minutes to 2 a.m., the Sunday September 20, 2026in order to reestablish legal time fixed on Greenwich Mean Time (GMT).
The draft decree also repeals Decree No. 2.18.855 of October 26, 2018, which established the maintenance of time GMT+1 throughout the year by adding 60 minutes to legal time.
The return to GMT time comes after a long public debate on the time regime in Morocco. For several years, citizens and civil society actors have been calling for an abandonment of GMT+1 time, believing that legal time is more suited to the rhythm of daily life as well as the organization of family and social life.
