The spring of 2026 was quite rainy in the republic, and the volumes of the spring flood flow were recorded above the norm. “Armenpress”–At the press conference held in the press hall of the Ministry of Environment of the Republic of Armenia Levon Azizyan, director of the RA Ministry of Environment “HayHydromet” SNOC, stated that the volumes of the spring floods were especially high in the basins of the Hrazdan, Arpa, Vedi, Dzknaget, Vorotan rivers, making up to 170 percent of the norm. Heavy rainfall continued in June. In particular, in June, the average monthly flow of water in all rivers exceeded the norm.
“Abundant precipitations have had their impact on the water level of Lake Sevan. If the level of Lake Sevan was 1900.22m on January 1, 2026, then as of June 24, the level of the lake is 1900.73m. This indicator is higher by 3 cm compared to the same period last year. During the month of June of this year, such rates of lake level increase are rare. In the period between June 1 and June 24 of this year, the level of Lake Sevan rose by 15 cm, and such a rise was last seen more than three decades ago, in 1993,” said Levon Azizyan.
Referring to the water intake released from Sevan, Levon Azizyan noted that due to the rainy season, this release will be late this year. For example, from June 6, 2025, water was taken from Lake Sevan for irrigation purposes. From June 6 to June 24 inclusive, 31,677 million cubic meters of water had already been released from the lake. This year, release from Lake Sevan has not yet been carried out.
“It is true that the filling of reservoirs is positive this year, mostly close to 100 percent or more, but it is not enough. There are regions where it is not possible to irrigate without releasing water from Lake Sevan, therefore there will be a release. I will add here that sufficient filling of the reservoirs will have a positive effect and this year less water will be released from Sevan,” said Levon Azizyan.
