Aftershocks from earthquakes in Venezuela can last from several months to a year. As reported “Armenpress”William Barnhart, coordinator of the Earthquake Hazard Program of the US Geological Survey, reported this with reference to “RIA Novosti”.
“After that earthquake, the aftershocks will probably continue for several months to a year. “Some of these aftershocks can be strong enough to cause strong aftershocks and even more damage,” Barnhart said.
He also noted that the frequency and intensity of aftershocks will decrease over time.
The territory of Venezuela was shaken by two powerful earthquakes, the first of which, according to the US Geological Service, had a magnitude of 7.2, and the second – a magnitude of 7.5. Thirty more tremors followed them. Authorities reported that at least 164 people were killed and 971 were injured. Many houses were destroyed, infrastructures were damaged, and the country’s main airport was closed.
