Luanda (Angola), June 26, 2026 (SPS) – The Minister of Foreign Affairs and African Affairs, Mr. Mohamed Yeslam Besit, was received today, Friday, in the Angolan capital, Luanda, by the Secretary of State for Foreign Relations of the Republic of Angola, Ms. Esmeralda Bravo Conde da Silva Mendonça, in the presence of the Ambassador of the Sahrawi Republic to Angola, Mr. Hamdi El Khalil.

The reception took place on behalf of the Angolan Minister of Foreign Relations and the President of the Republic of Angola, who were on a mission outside the country, where the Sahrawi Foreign Minister, in his capacity as a special envoy of the President of the Republic and the Secretary-General of the Front, Mr. Ibrahim Ghali, delivered a written message addressed to his Angolan counterpart, the President of the Republic of Angola, Mr. João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço.

This visit comes within the framework of the permanent political dialogue that brings together the Sahrawi Republic and the Republic of Angola, and the strong historical relations that exist between the two countries, which are based on the foundations of friendship, solidarity and cooperation for decades.
The meeting also constituted an occasion during which the Angolan Secretary of State reviewed the nomination of Ambassador Josefa Lionel Correa Sako for the position of Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) for the period 2027-2031, where the Sahrawi Foreign Minister expressed the Sahrawi Republic’s welcome of this nomination, praising the professional and diplomatic career of the Angolan Ambassador and the work she undertook during her tenure as African Union Commissioner for Agriculture, Rural Development, Blue Economy and Sustainable Environment.

During the meeting, the two sides stressed the strength of the bilateral relations between the Sahrawi Republic and the Republic of Angola, which go back to the year 1976, when Angola was one of the first countries in the world to recognize the Sahrawi Republic following its declaration, and since then it has been steadfastly defending the inalienable right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination and independence, in line with the principles of the Charter of the United Nations and the Constitutive Law of the African Union.
