The Special Prosecution Against Corruption and Organized Crime has seized the bank accounts of the companies connected to the Zvrnec project. Capital has learned that the seizure was ordered by the prosecutor Altin Dumani.
It is not yet known how much is the seized amount and in which companies. But a few days ago, the Khayyat brothers transferred 195 million dollars to the National Commercial Bank, which money would be used to pay for the purchase of land and the start of construction work on the resort.
Investors from Qatar, partners of Jared Kushner, have opened two companies in Albania for the Zvërnec project. Initially by opening in Albania the branch of their company Urbacon Trading and Contracting, one of the largest construction companies in the Arab world and later through the establishment of the company Sazan Operations Holding.
The latter, although it bears the name of Sazan, will be engaged in the Zvrnec project.
It is still unclear with what motivation the money was blocked, as the Khayyat brothers are among the richest families in Qatar and own a multi-billion dollar empire. But apparently the blocking of financing is a preventive measure to prevent property transactions within the framework of the investigations that SPAK is conducting on this project. Meanwhile, sources inform that the case of Zvrnec has been under investigation by the Special Prosecutor’s Office for more than a year.
The Zvrnec project has already received a considerable blow, while it remains to be seen what will be the reaction of the investors from Qatar and especially of Jared Kushner. Faced with a similar situation in Serbia, the Kushner family withdrew from the project to build a luxury hotel as soon as the Serbian prosecutor’s office opened an investigation into the case.
The situation in Zvërnec has escalated into massive protests over the last two days, while the government accuses that these protests are also being instigated by external factors, especially Greece, who do not want Albania to attract investments of this size.capital.al
