Members of the European Parliament today made an urgent call to the European Commission and the Delegation of the European Union to Serbia to protect activists, journalists and students who are currently exposed to brutal retaliation by the state for presenting the truth. transmits “H1”.
After the student protests in 2025 in Belgrade, hundreds of citizens testified before the competent authorities that the authorities used acoustic weapons against the peaceful demonstrators.
Instead of launching an independent investigation into the use of this dangerous equipment, the Serbian authorities and President Aleksandar Vucic launched an “Orwellian” counter-offensive, absurdly accusing the protesters themselves of using the device, the letter from the MEPs states.
More than 30 MPs from five political groups in the European Parliament are behind the letter, which was initiated by Slovenian MP Vladimir Prebilić.
The members of the European Parliament assess that the subsequent legal and police repression against those people does not represent a legitimate judicial process, but a coordinated campaign of intimidation.
“As observers have rightly warned, the purpose of these searches and proceedings is not to gather evidence for criminal proceedings, but to spread fear. Their purpose is to send a message to the general public that anyone who raises their voice against injustice and an authoritarian regime will suffer the same fate,” the letter states.
The MEPs point out that the EU cannot remain a silent observer “while a candidate country uses fabricated intelligence to terrorize its citizens for speaking the truth”.
Along with more than 30 MEPs from 5 political groups, I call on the Serbian 🇷🇸authorities to immediately stop the prosecution of students and journalists!

They see it as a classic tactic of authoritarianism that seeks to stifle dissent through psychological pressure and abuse of the justice system.
“We urgently ask the European Commission, especially President Ursula von der Leyen and Commissioner Marta Koss, as well as the head of the EU Delegation in Belgrade, Andreas von Beckerath, to publicly condemn this harassment, to put pressure on the Serbian authorities to immediately drop all charges against peaceful protesters and to make it clear that using fear as a weapon against civil society is completely incompatible with European integration,” it concludes. the letter.
What happened at the protest in Belgrade?
On March 15, 2025, in Belgrade, at the call of the students, the largest gathering in the history of the state was organized.
As part of the program, a 15-minute silence was held for the victims of the collapse of the canopy in Novi Sad, but in the 11th minute, a loud sound was heard, which the citizens later described as similar to the impact of a plane or a vehicle approaching the crowd at high speed.
The crowd in that part of the city split into two and there was a great panic among the people. In the following days, accusations appeared in the public that a sonic weapon – a sonic cannon – was used.
The authorities denied that any of the above had happened, but later it was discovered that the police possessed “LRAD 450HL” sound cannons, which they first claimed they did not possess at all, then that they were in warehouses, and finally, the media “Danas” reported that the devices were nevertheless mounted on police vehicles and that those vehicles were on the streets of Belgrade that day.
After the incident, a large number of citizens called doctors, reporting similar symptoms – dizziness, headache, nausea and ringing in the ears.
The High Public Prosecutor’s Office in Belgrade said on June 19 that it suspected that the students “planned a simulation of a sound cannon” at the March 15 protest, adding that it had ordered the collection of information and interviews with anyone who publicly claimed that a sound cannon had been used.
