May in Latvia will come with a rapid rise in temperature, but warm summer days will be replaced by cooler weather, forecasters predict.
According to the latest data from the European Center for Medium-term Weather Forecasts, the first day of May is expected to be quite sunny, it will be cloudier in the eastern part of Latvia, where there may be some rain. With a slow to moderate west, north-west wind blowing, the air will warm up to +14..+19 degrees, in places in Kurzeme and Zemgale the thermometer may reach +20 degrees, while in some parts of the coast the temperature will fluctuate around +10 degrees.
Saturday is expected to be dry and mostly sunny, with a slow to moderate westerly, southwesterly wind. At night, the air will cool down to +2..+7 degrees, in the afternoon the temperature will reach +18..+22 degrees, cooler weather will remain on the west coast of Kurzeme and the coast of Northern Vidzeme.
On Sunday, an atmospheric front may cross Latvia from the northwest – short-term rain is possible in many places, and thunder showers in some places. Before the arrival of the front, heat up to +23 degrees is expected in a large part of the country.
The reliability of forecasts for the following days is low. According to the current data of the European Center for Medium-Term Weather Forecasts, on May 4-6, the air temperature in Latvia may reach up to +25 degrees, but in the second half of next week, all days could be cooler than +15 degrees, frost is possible at night.
Breaking heat records at the beginning of May is not expected, the exception is the May 2nd and 3rd record in Kolkata – +20.9 and +18.2 degrees, respectively. At other observation stations, the heat record for the first days of May is +24..+29 degrees. The highest air temperature recorded on the territory of the country in the first days of the month, according to the data of the Latvian Center for Environment, Geology and Meteorology, is +29.4 degrees on May 2, 1977 in Mērsrag.
