Nearly 85 percent of Finland’s public swimming beaches are safe to use, according to the European Commission’s annual water report.
Of the 304 bathing sites assessed, only three — Pikkukoski in Helsinki, Mariebad in Mariehamn and Ahvensaari in Vaasa — were rated poor.
The highest shares of top-rated bathing waters were recorded in Greece and Cyprus, which led the European rankings.
More than 85 percent of bathing sites across the European Union are rated as having excellent water quality. The bathing quality of coastal waters is generally better than that of rivers and lakes, the report found.
