Havana/Swiss photographer Edgar Frey presents in Old Havana The extravagance of emptinessan exhibition dedicated to places and objects that have fallen into disuse. The exhibition opens on Tuesday, November 10 at the Provincial Center of Plastic Arts and Design in Havana and will remain open until December 6.
Frey focuses on how the perception of a place changes when the activity for which it was conceived ceases. In his photographs, unoccupied spaces seem like stages waiting for something to happen. The objects, separated from their daily function, take on the presence of involuntary sculptures. From this displacement arises the surreal character of the exhibition, which makes strange things that were once familiar.
In October 2024, Frey presented an exhibition titled Extravaganz der Leere. His ties with Cuba include Anatomy of transiencea project that he showed in individual exhibitions in Havana, Manzanillo and Zurich, in addition to participating in group exhibitions. In both projects, the photographer returns to the same concern: how the passage of time becomes visible in that which remains.
