The former president of Argentina Cristina Fernández de Kirchner (2007-2015) This Monday, November 2, he did not rule out a presidential candidacy for the 2027 elections, as he hinted in an interview with the American newspaper Washington Post from his apartment, where he meets house arreston San José Street, in Buenos Aires.
However, as the former president recognizes, the possibility of attending those elections on behalf of Peronism would depend on the lifting of the disqualification from holding public office. This measure is part of the sentence handed down against him by the Argentine justice system in the so-called Road Causein which she was convicted of irregularities in the awarding of public works contracts.
Fernández de Kirchner has his hopes pinned on the pronouncement of the Human Rights Committee of the United Nations Organization (UN)which, although it will not be binding, could raise questions about the judicial process against the former president. However, one of its lawyers, the Brazilian Rafael Valim, does not believe that Argentina will be in contempt of the eventual ruling of this UN body.
“Given Argentina’s tradition in human rights and the openness of its legal system to international decisions in this area, I see a much greater possibility of compliance, even in the case of Cristina, despite the fact that it is a system that seeks to persecute her,” he assured.
For her part, the former Argentine president confirmed her innocence. “Tell me where I put the money. Because, honestly, if I had stolen it, I wouldn’t be in jail. I would be free, because I would have been able to buy off the Argentine judicial system, which is corrupt,” he alleged.
In another sense, the former president assured that the anti-system anger that brought the current president to power Javier Milei will end up turning against him, due to a management marked by 40% poverty and 211% annual inflation. “Now many Argentines are frustrated because their lives have not improved, their money does not last until the end of the month and they see a Government that not only does nothing for the poor, but actively attacks them,” described Fernández de Kirchner.
Likewise, he predicted a defeat for the American president Donald Trump in the midterm elections and advocated for a left capable of presenting realistic economic alternatives to address the problems that most concern citizens, such as the high cost of living.
Furthermore, he reported that he spends his time during house arrest exercising, studying English and Chinese, and following current events in Argentina and the international scene.
