The president of the United States, donald trumpannounced this Friday the ban on access to the White House for the journalistic teams of the news networks CNN and MSNOW, as well as for the news portal Politico, accusing the three media outlets of systematically disseminating false information.
The announcement, made official through the digital platforms of the head of staterepresents a new turning point in the tensions between the US administration and the media accredited in the west wing of the presidential complex, where reporters from the affected networks were carrying out their usual duties at the time of the release of the statement.
The measure is added to the operational restrictions applied at the beginning of his mandate against the Associated Press (AP) news agencywhose correspondents were limited from entering certain official events after declining to use the name “Gulf of America” to geographically refer to the Gulf of Mexico.
“I am proud to announce that, effective immediately, I am banning Fake News CNN, MSNOW—which recently changed its name from MSNBC due to its lack of viewership and credibility—and Politico from the White House, as a result of their constant coverage of FAKE NEWS. The media should not be able to constantly write or broadcast fiction and lies when covering the President of the United States,” Trump said via Truth Social.
In the same statement, the american president warned that the restriction of institutional access could be progressively expanded to other information platforms and international networks depending on their lines of editorial coverage.
The access restrictions imposed by the Executive have generated immediate alerts in trade union organizations and groups defending press freedom in USAwhich have described government retaliation, civil lawsuits and accreditation vetoes as mechanisms of censorship and intimidation of independent journalistic work.
