The president of the United States, Donald Trump, assured this Monday that Tuesday’s midterm elections, in which the Republicans defend their majority in Congress, are “the most important” in history and warned that the Democratic opposition has “dangerous” and even “jihadist” candidates.
The president closed the campaign with a speech in front of the Abraham Lincoln Memorial pond in Washington, in which he dedicated a good part of his speech to boasting about the renovation works he has promoted in the capital and the White House.
“As you know, this is the last day before the midterm elections, the most important, I believe, in our lifetime. The Democratic Party has nominated the most radical and dangerous candidates in the history of the United States,” he said.
Trump even claimed that they are “jihadists and members of the Muslim Brotherhood”, an unfounded accusation that he has repeated during the campaign against the Democratic candidate for the Senate of Michigan, Abdul El-Sayed, who if elected would become the first Muslim senator in the history of the United States.
Trump arrived at the pond after a frenetic tour of the country in which he has given 25 rallies in states, mainly Republican strongholds that according to polls are leaning towards Democrats, such as Texas, Iowa or Kansas.
In the case of the House of Representatives, the Decision Desk HQ forecasting model estimates a victory for the Democrats, with an 84% probability of taking control of the chamber, five points more than a week ago.
According to the poll aggregator, the Democratic Party has a 65% chance of regaining the majority in the Senate, eight percentage points more than seven days ago.
In this Tuesday’s elections, 35 seats in the Upper House, 435 in the Lower House, more than 30 state governorships and other local positions will be chosen.
