The US President had previously explained the world to journalists at the end of the G7 summit in Évian in southeastern France – at least as he sees it at the moment. Finally he had all participants, from host Emmanuel Macron until Ursula von der Leyenlet it be known: “I am the one boss.” Just in case it wasn’t clear to everyone yet. In the imperial pomp of Versailles, the “Boss” signed, flanked by Emmanuel and Brigitte Macron and under the eyes of Adlatus Marco Rubio, then the preliminary peace agreement with Iran.

To welcome him to Évian, Macron greeted the 80-year-old with the Tom Petty song “Love Is a Long Road”. As a farewell in Versailles and before Trump’s departure, Petty’s “Free Fallin'” was rather inappropriate, and he would probably have understood his “I Won’t Back Down” as a declaration of war. All that remained as a tribute was a song from the “Boss” himself, even though Trump and Bruce Springsteen aka “The Boss” can’t smell each other.
