Hamid Karzai, the former president of Afghanistan, and Abdullah Abdullah, the former chairman of the Supreme National Reconciliation Council, at the same time as the 10th of Muharram, the day of Ashura, commemorated this occasion by publishing separate messages and emphasized the values of unity, justice, sacrifice and Islamic solidarity.
The tenth day of the month of Muharram in 1445 AH coincides with the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (peace be upon him). Imam Hussain (peace be upon him), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family) and 72 of his companions were martyred in the 10th month of Muharram in the year 61 AH in the Karbala plain of Iraq by Yazid’s men.
In his message, Hamid Karzai called Ashura a reminder of the reformist movement of Imam Hussain (peace be upon him) and said that by standing against social deviations, he called the society to reform affairs, take responsibility and wake up, and with his sacrifice, he created the eternal saga of Karbala.
He added that the people of Afghanistan, like other Muslims, glorified Ashura and the Hussaini movement and consider the love of the Ahl al-Bayt of the Prophet of Islam as a factor of unity, brotherhood and empathy among them. Karzai expressed his hope that the compatriots, taking advantage of the spirituality of this day, will work unitedly for the progress, prosperity, expansion of science and knowledge, and prosperity of Afghanistan.
Meanwhile, Dr. Abdullah Abdullah in a message, on the arrival of the 10th of Muharram, congratulated and condoled the day of Ashura to the Muslim nation and described Ashura as one of the great and meaningful days in the history of Islam, in which values such as faith, piety, patience, sacrifice, and endurance have found lasting expression.
Abdullah stated that Ashura calls Muslims to reflect on religious teachings, strengthen the spirit of solidarity, observe justice and adhere to humane and Islamic principles.
