“We have to learn that regardless of whether it is a multicultural society, when there are elections there is only one winner, but given our political and party structure, the winner even when he had a two-thirds majority reached for a coalition, which is a very responsible act”, said the president of the state Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova today.
In response to a journalist’s question regarding the statement of the leader of the opposition Democratic Union for Integration (DUI) Ali Ahmeti, that in the elections they should form a coalition “winner with winner”, Siljanovska-Davkova said that such an approach is not in accordance with the basic principles of the electoral process.
She pointed out that in Macedonian political practice, parties with a convincing parliamentary majority often opted for coalition government, which, according to her, represents a responsible political approach and enables wider participation in decision-making.
– We have to learn once and for all that regardless of whether it is a multicultural society, when there are elections, there is only one winner. Why else would someone go to the elections, if the received votes are not a condition to be declared the winner? But given our political and party structure, the winner, even when he had a two-thirds majority, resorted to a coalition, which is a very responsible act. Why? And because of the common responsibility, I mean especially the Albanian parties, the common responsibility for solving the problems inside the institutions – said Siljanovska-Davkova.
In the election process, the president says, only one can be the winner, stressing that the thesis of a coalition based on the principle of “winner with winner” can lead to long-term dominance of the same political entities and limit the possibility of participation of other parties in power.
– The result cannot be the desired one, if you do not have the right to choose in the coalition some whose program, even ideology, is compatible with yours. It would be different if you join a pre-election coalition, because that’s what we call it in electoral law – you can be a small party, but with a large electoral capacity, when the other parties, that is, the winning party, want you as a coalition partner. But this thesis, that there are two winners and that they should always enter, leads to 20 years of power for only one and the other, to the impossibility of others entering the coalition and, of course, being respected – stressed Siljanovska-Davkova.
