A premiere for Romanian diplomacy: the UN is discussing a topic requested by Bucharest. Țoiu will present the “flagrant violations of international law”

For the first time, the UN Security Council meets at the express request of Romania on a topic that directly involves it, announced the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Oana Țoiu, who will present, on Monday evening, the flagrant violations of international law that Russia is guilty of, with reference to the recent crash, in Galati, of a Russian drone.

The United Nations Security Council meeting takes place on Monday, following the notification sent on Friday, immediately after the CSAT meeting, following the Galați incident.

“I will present from 15.00 local time (22.00 Romanian time) the flagrant violations of international law and the risks generated by these repeated actions of the Russian Federation”Oana Țoiu sent in a message on Facebook and X.

Romania’s approach aims to bring it to the attention of the international community “the serious consequences of the violation of Romanian airspace and the need to increase diplomatic pressure to respect international law and protect regional security“, explained the minister.

Oana Țoiu emphasized that, together with the UN partners, Romania continues the pressure for an immediate ceasefire and a just and lasting peace in Ukraine.

The request was sent on Friday, immediately after the CSAT meeting, when the authorities decided to inform NATO, the European Union and notify the UN.

What is Romania’s approach based on?

Romania’s ambassador to the UN, Cornel Feruță, stated that Romania activated the procedures “shortly after the incident”considering the drone intrusion and its explosion to represent “serious violations of the UN Charter and international law.”

He specified that Romania’s approach is based on articles 34 and 35 of the UN Charter, which allow bringing to the attention of the Council situations that may affect international peace and security.

“Immediately after the incident of the Russian drone that exploded on the apartment building in Galati, Romania launched consultations at the UN and requested a meeting of the Security Council, based on articles 34 and 35 of the United Nations Charter”, Cornel Feruța transmitted.

The Romanian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Oana Țoiu, will also participate in Monday’s meeting.

We remind you that Romania will receive reinforcements from NATO allies after the explosion of a Russian-made kamikaze drone on a block in Galati county. Spain sends two HN90 helicopters, and Italy supplements the military contingent in the country with another 100 soldierssources from the Presidential Administration declared on Monday, June 1.
