Speed limits, parking rules and night bans for rental e-scooters differ sharply between municipalities.
Rules for rental electric scooters vary considerably across Finnish municipalities, according to a new survey by transport authority Traficom.
The most common restrictions concern speed limits, parking and operating seasons. More than 90 percent of municipalities surveyed limit scooter speed — but the maximum permitted speed ranges from just 8 km/h to 25 km/h depending on the location.
The rules also differ between Finland’s largest cities.
Weekend night riding is banned in five of the seven biggest cities. Tampere and Jyväskylä currently remain exceptions, although Tampere is now considering introducing a nighttime ban due to accident concerns, predominately associated with drunk driving.
Many cities also require operators to use reaction tests aimed at preventing intoxicated riding.
Parking remains one of the biggest challenges, according to Traficom, with cities increasingly introducing designated parking zones and stricter permit conditions.
The survey covered 58 municipalities, with additional data gathered from public sources.
