A 33-year-old Romanian citizen was arrested in the resort of Magaluf, Spain, after an incident in a hotel pool in which a four-year-old British child was allegedly involved. Local authorities are investigating him on suspicion of sexual assault.
According to the information provided by the police and sources close to the investigation, the man would have approached the child and hugged and kissed him on the face in the pool area, in the presence of several tourists. The incident took place on Wednesday afternoon, May 20, in a hotel in the Majorcan resort, whose name has not been made public, according to Daily Mail.
Witnesses alerted the hotel staff, who contacted the local police in Calvià. The officers took statements from those present, as well as from the child’s parents, and later proceeded to detain the suspect.
The mother’s reaction and the intervention of the authorities
The child’s mother intervened immediately after noticing the interaction between the man and the minor, according to sources in the investigation.
In documenting the case, witnesses described the suspect’s gestures as “hugs and kisses.”
After the arrest, the man was taken before the court in Palma, being escorted by two officers of the Civil Guard. He was presented to the court in the clothes he was wearing at the time of his arrest, and the court session was held behind closed doors.
Until this moment, the authorities have not made public the judge’s decision regarding the continuation of the investigation, the measure of preventive detention or possible release conditions.
The child’s family have since returned to the UK, but it is not clear whether the departure was scheduled or accelerated following the incident.
The case comes shortly after another incident investigated by the Spanish police in the Palma de Mallorca area. Earlier this month, authorities detained a van driver suspected of kidnapping and sexually assaulting a British tourist on the Paseo Marítimo promenade.
According to the investigation, the woman was forced into a vehicle after the suspect pulled her by the arm. Later, while he was driving, he would have sexually assaulted her. The victim managed to escape when the vehicle stopped at a traffic light, at which point witnesses in the traffic intervened and alerted the authorities.
