Zsófia Törőcsik set a world record with a 105-meter dive at the International Association for Underwater Activities (AIDA) competition held in Mabini, Philippines.
World Games champion Zsófia Törőcsik had already indicated during her preparations that she was in excellent shape for the season and was getting closer and closer to the sport’s limits in terms of depth.
During pre-competition training, she reached 107 meters, making it clear that breaking the record was a realistic goal, the Hungarian diver’s press team told MTI on Monday, noting that new goals are opening up for Törőcsik: she is expected to achieve results close to the world record in the bifin (two-fins) category (where a separate fin is worn on each foot – editor’s note) as well.
If she succeeds, the 37-year-old Hungarian competitor could uniquely reach the pinnacle of the sport in multiple disciplines.
According to László Bacskó, president of the nOxygen Apnea Club, a real breakthrough has occurred in recent years:
“Hungarian freediving has practically been built from scratch in just a few years. Today, we are competing at the world’s highest level and achieving results that were previously considered unimaginable. Zsófia Törőcsik’s performance is one of the most important milestones in this process,” he said.
The expert emphasized that while other nations have been developing the sport for decades, in Hungary, all of this has happened in just under five years. The nOxygen Apnea Club plays a key role in this, having become an internationally recognized brand.
Last year, Törőcsik won the World Games held in Chengdu, China, with a world record in the finned free diving category, becoming the first woman to complete 300 meters underwater.
The World Pool Diving Championships will be held in Budapest in late May and early June.
