EDITOR: Our senior citizens have, in most cases, made a great contribution to our society. Sadly, but true, many are not treated with the respect and gratitude which they deserved.
In many cases it is an unpleasant experience for many senior citizens travelling in public transport. For often times, the music in terms of its loudness and content is very uncomfortable to them. The unpleasantness of some of the conductors towards them if they should ask for lowering of music and reduce speed, many times they would be given very distasteful words. Besides, there are very uncomfortable seats where they are placed and the squeeze they would receive in these overcrowded vans.
Many senior citizens are often times treated impolitely and without respect when they go to some business places and ministry’s. Many times if they are not dressed like someone who works in an executive person, that senior citizen is often looked down upon and some times spoken to rudely.
Our senior citizens made very valuable contributions to our country and it’s development, yet many times they are not shown that respect and appreciation.We must also bear in mind that we are likely to reach their age and would like to be treated with respect and politeness.
I, therefore, urge us as fellow Vincentians to show respect to our elderlies. Let us treated them politely and be caring and loving to them. After all, many of us owe our upbringing and development to many of these senior citizens. Let us be appreciative of each other and treat each other, including our senior citizens with respect, love and appreciation.
