“We will reduce the number of troops significantly and withdraw far more than 5,000,” the US leader said.
The Pentagon previously announced that the US would withdraw approximately 5,000 troops from Germany over the next six to twelve months following a “thorough review of the Department’s forces in Europe.” Notably, it is home to Ramstein Air Force Base, the headquarters of US Air Force Europe and a NATO facility.
The US Department of Defense has announced a reduction in the US military presence in Germany by 5,000 troops on the orders of Pete Hegseth. The ministry explained the move as “due to the requirements of the theater of operations and conditions on the ground.”
German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius says Washington’s decision was expected. He called on European countries to strengthen their defense capabilities.
Commenting on the reduction of the US troop presence, NATO said it was confident in its defense and deterrence capabilities. The Alliance spokesman added that “the movement towards a stronger Europe within a stronger NATO continues”.
