A strong electrical fluctuation affected Greater Caracas and areas of Miranda this Wednesday around 2:43 pm, according to multiple reports from users on social networks and citizen media.
Sectors of the capital such as Bello Campo, El Paraíso, Montalbán, San Martín, Santa Teresa, San Agustín, El Cementerio, Caricuao, Cumbres de Curumo and Colinas de Bello Monte were left without service or with significant drops. In Miranda, damage was reported in Los Teques, Carrizal and Ocumare del Tuy.
Although a national blackout was not confirmed, the instability adds to the constant reports of prolonged outages in several states of the country. In regions such as Carabobo (Valencia), Zulia (Maracaibo), Aragua, Lara, Monagas and Guárico, citizens denounce rationing that exceeds 8 and up to 12 hours a day, with protests and banging pots and pans in several locations.
This occurs just after the 45 days of the “energy saving plan” announced by Delcy Rodríguez, who had attributed part of the failures to the “perpendicular passage of solar rays.” However, for many analysts and those affected, the crisis responds to structural problems of the National Electrical System: lack of maintenance, insufficient investment and dependence on the Guri hydroelectric plant.
Neighbors report damage to appliances due to fluctuations, loss of food and effects on the drinking water supply, which depends on the electrical service.
As of the closing of this note, Corpoelec has not issued an official statement regarding this afternoon’s fluctuation.
