Gunmen opened fire on a couple travelling in a vehicle in Princes Town, killing a woman and leaving a man wounded in the early hours of Wednesday.
The ambush occurred shortly after midnight and claimed the life of Monifer Carrie, 27, of Beetham Gardens in Port-of-Spain.
Isaiah Cruickshank, aka ‘Touchy’, 30, of Moonan Avenue on Manahambre Road, in Princes Town, was wounded and hospitalised.
A police report stated that the couple was driving along a roadway in a white Nissan Sentra headed in an easterly direction along Malgretoute Road, when another vehicle blocked theirs along the road.
Two men emerged from and discharged multiple rounds at the couple’s vehicle before fleeing the scene.
A relative of Cruickshank ran to the scene and found Carrie on the roadway, and Cruickshank was in the vehicle.
They were conveyed to the Princes Town District Health Facility, where Carrie was pronounced dead at 12.36 a.m.
Cruickshank sustained several gunshot injuries and was transferred to the San Fernando General Hospital for further treatment.
A team of officers from the Princes Town CID and Charge Room, including PCs Dennis, Chaitram, Smith, Hosein, Sanatan and WPC Babatunde and Sgt Singh, as well as officers of the Homicide Bureau of Investigations of Region Three, responded.
Police have since launched an investigation into the incident and are working to determine the circumstances surrounding the attack, including a possible motive.
