The United States and Iran reach a peace agreement

The Governments of the United States and Iran reached a preliminary peace agreement on Sunday, June 14, 2026, which will put an end to three and a half months of war between both countries, as confirmed by the American, Iranian and Pakistani authorities, who have acted as mediators between Washington and Tehran.

The President of the United States, Donald Trump, announced that he has reached an agreement with Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz after more than three months of conflict.

In a publication on his social network Truth Social, the Republican leader explained that, in exchange for the reopening of the strait, the United States will lift the maritime blockade imposed on the entry and exit of ships in Iranian ports.

“The agreement with the Islamic Republic of Iran is now complete. Congratulations everyone! I hereby fully authorize the toll-free opening of the Strait of Hormuz and simultaneously authorize the immediate lifting of the United States naval blockade. Ships of the world, start your engines! Let the oil flow!” Trump wrote, without offering further details of the agreement.

The Prime Minister of Pakistan, Shehbaz Sharif, confirmed the existence of the agreement and announced that the official signing will take place on Friday, June 19 in Switzerland.

“Both parties have declared the immediate and permanent termination of military operations on all fronts, including Lebanon,” he explained.

Iranian confirmation of the peace agreement

Iranian Vice Foreign Minister Ali Gharaibabadi anticipated the publication of the text of the memorandum: “We will soon publish the text of the understanding agreement and the people will see how many achievements we have achieved and how many commitments we have made.”

Also, he specified that “the commitments in relation to the achievements are not comparable,” in reference to the terms obtained by Tehran in the negotiation.

The official also said that “today’s military power has contributed to advancing our affairs and finalizing the agreement.”

He warned that “wherever there is a breach of commitments by the counterparty,” they will carry out the “corresponding specific action.”

The official confirmation also came through a statement from the Secretariat of the Supreme National Security Council of Iran, which informed the “noble people of Iran” that it “finalized the text of a memorandum of understanding on negotiations to end the war between Iran and the United States.”

The document specified that “the war and military operations on all fronts, including Lebanon, will end immediately and permanently as of tonight” and that “the maritime blockade against Iran will be lifted immediately and completely.”

The text concluded that “the Islamic Republic of Iran appreciates the efforts of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and the State of Qatar.”

The agreement was brokered by Pakistan with the support of Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye.

Three and a half months at war

The agreement seeks to end the war that began on February 28, 2026, after the offensive launched by the United States and Israel against Iran, which resulted in the death of the supreme leader of the Islamic Republic, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in power since 1989.

Tehran, which appointed the Ayatollah’s son, Mojtaba Khamenei, as its new leader, responded with attacks against Israel and countries in the region that host US bases, in addition to blocking the Strait of Hormuz. This closure has caused serious economic disruptions, given that around 20% of the world’s oil transits through this route.

The United States and Iran, which agreed to a ceasefire last April, have negotiated in recent months a pact to end hostilities and reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
