The Government has launched one information campaign to sensitize citizens about preventive measures that can help a prevent the proliferation and stabilization of the tiger mosquito in the Principality. The initiative is developed with the collaboration of the commons andAndorra Research + Innovation (AR+I) and includes the distribution of informative leaflets throughout the territory, as well as dissemination actions through the social networks of the participating entities.
The campaign coincides with the arrival of higher temperatures, a period considered key for applying prevention measures. Among the recommendations I stand outto the elimination of small points of stagnant water, such as dishes under pots, buckets or tires, spaces that favor the reproduction of the insect. Also it is advisable to avoid the accumulation of leaves in drainage areas and drainage channels.
As he remembers Governmentthe involvement of citizens is essential to reduce the presence of the tiger mosquito in private spaces such as balconies, terraces, gardens or orchards.
The insect has one special incidence from a health point of view because it causes numerous bites and can act as a transmitter of viral diseases such as dengue fever, chikungunya fever or the Zika virus.
The presence of tiger mosquito in Andorra it was confirmed thanks to a study powered by AR+I on mosquitoes and other insect vectors, carried out during the summer and autumn of 2025. The results, published in a scientific journal, confirmed for the first time the presence of the species in the country with regular detections of eggs, larvae and adult specimens. The positive samples were located in the parishes of Sant Julià de Lòria, Andorra la Vella and Escaldes-Engordany.
In addition, during the last sampling campaign, carried out last October, they were detected eggs able to withstand low winter temperaturesa fact that demonstrates the species’ ability to adapt and survive in the Andorran territory.
The communication campaign was agreed at the last meeting of the Interministerial Commission “One Health”, at the proposal of Ministries of Health and Environment, Agriculture and Livestock, with the participation of AR+I and the commons.
