Tajikistan and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) discussed the project “Effective management of water resources of the Bahri Tojik reservoir” (Tajik Sea, or Kairakkum reservoir). The meeting took place on June 12 in Ulaanbaatar as part of the working visit of the Tajik delegation to Mongolia, the press service reports Ministry of Energy and Water Resources of Tajikistan.
From Tajikistan, the meeting was attended by Presidential Assistant for Economic Affairs Nematullo Khikmatullozoda and Minister of Energy and Water Resources Daler Juma.
ADB was represented by the Director General of the Central and West Asia Department, Leah Guterres, and the Regional Head for Cooperation and Regional Integration, Assad Alim.
The central topic of the negotiations was the project “Effective management of water resources of the Bahri Tojik reservoir.”
During the meeting, Nematullo Khikmatullozoda noted that the project has transboundary and regional significance and is part of a group of “infrastructure projects for adaptation to climate change that benefit more than one country.”

The project provides for the strengthening of the protective dams of the reservoir to prevent the risk of flooding, the reconstruction and modernization of pumping stations, and the improvement of land reclamation conditions and drainage and collector systems.
It is also planned to introduce a modern digital control and monitoring system SCADA.
It is expected that the implementation of the project will contribute to the effective management of water resources of the Bahri Tojik reservoir in the face of climate change, increasing the reliability of water supply for irrigation of agricultural lands and increasing the potential for electricity production.
It was also noted at the meeting that a preliminary feasibility study of the project was prepared with the support of the Asian Development Bank.
Earlier, on April 6, 2026, Daler Juma held a meeting with the Director of the ADB Agriculture, Food Security, Natural Resources and Rural Development Office, Jiangfeng Zhang. It also discussed issues of effective management of water resources of the Bahri Tojik reservoir.
