Geneva (UN Human Rights Council), June 17, 2026 (SPS)Today, Wednesday, during the work of the current session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, Algeria renewed its call to support direct negotiations between the two parties to the conflict in Western Sahara, the Kingdom of Morocco and the Polisario Front, leading to enabling the Sahrawi people to exercise their right to self-determination. It also called for the situation in the region to be given the necessary attention.
In a speech he delivered during the interactive dialogue on the report of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, Ambassador Idris Lattrash, the Permanent Representative of Algeria to the United Nations in Geneva, stressed the need for the High Commissioner for Human Rights to organize the long-awaited field visit to Western Sahara, in light of the recent opinion issued by the Committee against Torture.
Ambassador Latrash reiterated Algeria’s support for the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in implementing its mandate, noting his country’s firm commitment to protecting and promoting human rights, through a reform approach based on balance and interconnection between various political, economic, social and cultural rights.
He explained that this approach is embodied in the reforms, development projects and social programs that Algeria is known for, in addition to the democratic path that is witnessing continuous strengthening, at a time when the country is preparing to organize legislative elections next month. (Was)
