With a red heat alert in place, the first schools in Luxembourg have started announcing modifications to their schedule due to the persisting elevated temperatures.
Primary schools in Mertert-Wasserbillig, Grevenmacher, Dudelange, and Kayl will cancel afternoon classes on Monday, while supervision by teaching staff and Maison Relais services will continue as normal. Similarly, in Berbourg, no afternoon classes will take place on 22 June, with teachers supervising students during the afternoon.
In Junglinster, afternoon classes for primary school pupils will also be cancelled on the 22nd as well as on 24 June. In addition, municipal authorities in Ell have cancelled afternoon classes on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.
There will be no nationwide school closures due to the heat. However, the Ministry of Education’s latest guidance states that parents of children with health issues may choose either to send their child to school under supervision or keep them at home during red-alert heat warning days.
The ministry also noted that local exemptions may be granted depending on classroom temperatures, as not all schools are equipped with air conditioning.
