With a total area of over 3,500 hectares, the “Gréngewald” is the largest contiguous forest in the Grand Duchy. Part of it, a good 850 hectares, is owned by the grand ducal family and is maintained by the Nature Administration (ANF). Grand Duke Guillaume would like to terminate the convention that regulates this early, as RTL reported. Guillaume is planning several projects in the forest that will benefit the general public. However, the government rejected this.
The Grünewald has been owned by changing rulers since the Middle Ages. After the Congress of Vienna in 1815, Wilhelm I had to part with parts of the forest for financial reasons. The state then gradually bought the area back from the beginning of the 20th century. However, there is still a persistent rumor that Prince Félix gambled away the “Gréngewald” and other lands in a Monegasque casino. However, former Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker (CSV) publicly denied this several times during his time in office.
