Details: The publication reminds that the position of Secretary General of the Alliance, which is currently held by Mark Rutte, will become vacant in 2028, if his powers are not extended with the consent of all member countries.

As the Observer writes, Starmer will have to secure significant support from the British government to have any chance of taking the seat of the NATO Secretary General. Because, although this position is elected without a formal vote, it requires the political agreement of all NATO member countries regarding a single candidate.
The publication predicts that it will be difficult for Starmer to get the support of 32 countries, because making political agreements is not his strong point.
At the same time, supporters of the British prime minister made considerable efforts to emphasize that the G7 summit in early June confirmed that Starmer is highly valued by other European leaders, and that his relationship with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi is so close that they sometimes accidentally “call each other from their pockets.”
Prehistory:
-
On June 22, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced that the time of his tenure in office came to an end. Although the official competition for the position of the leader of the Labor Party will begin only in July, Andy Burnham is considered the next prime minister of Britain.
-
On June 23, it became known that Starmer held secret negotiations with Burnham.
-
The other day, British Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy said that the country’s foreign policy, including support for Ukraine and restoration of ties with the EU, will not change after the resignation of Starmer and the arrival of a new prime minister.
