PARAMARIBO — Due to developments in the global market and the demand for electricity supply, delivery times of electricity machines may increase. Staatsolie therefore wants to secure capacity in a timely manner. Annand Jagesar, managing director of Staatsolie, informed President Jennifer Simons about developments within the offshore oil and gas sector and the expansion of the electricity supply in Suriname. During the meeting at the President’s Office on Thursday, the expansion of the generating capacity and the projects in Block 52 were discussed, among other things.
This concerns two machines with a combined capacity of 34 megawatts. The investment amounts to approximately USD 54 million and, in addition to the machines, also includes a machine hall and facilities for electricity drainage. “That is a considerable amount of energy and electricity that we can supply,” reports director Jagesar.
“The GranMorgu project is progressing well and we are still ready for first oil production in 2028. The first payments from this project to Suriname can also take place in 2028”
Staatsolie is also discussing with EBS how to respond to the expected growth in electricity demand as a result of offshore oil and gas development. The discussions also discussed gas developments in Block 52, where Staatsolie collaborates with Petronas. Staatsolie has given the president an update on the gas project. “Important developments are coming soon,” says director Jagesar. The aim is to produce the first gas molecules around 2030.
A few more steps are required to take the Final Investment Decision (FID). “We discussed it with the president and received all the support.” The Staatsolie director further notes that progress on the GranMorgu project is going well. “The GranMorgu project is progressing well and we are still ready for first oil production in 2028. The first payments from this project to Suriname can also take place in 2028.”
