BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, Apr 27, CMC – The St. Kitts and Nevis government has led the tributes to Elston “Ellie Matt” Nero, described as one of the country’s musical and cultural giants who died on Sunday.
“Ellie Matt was more than an entertainer, he was a pioneer, an innovator, and a national treasure whose sound, creativity, and stage presence helped shape the identity of our Carnival and the wider musical landscape of St. Kitts and Nevis,” said Creative Economy Minister, Samal Duggins.
“Through decades of excellence, he inspired generations and left an unforgettable mark on our Federation and the Caribbean region,” Duggins said in a statement, in which he said Ellie Matt’s, contributions to music, culture, and national pride will forever be remembered.
“The joy he created, the traditions he strengthened, and the legacy he built will continue to live on through his timeless work. Today, we mourn not only an iconic artist, but a son of the soil whose life brought honour to his community and country,” said Duggins.
He extend his “deepest condolences to his family, friends, supporters, and the entire cultural fraternity during this difficult time. May his soul rest in eternal peace, and may his legacy continue to play on.”
Former national monarch and the current Minister of Public Infrastructure, Energy and Utilities, Domestic Transport, Information, Communication and Technology and Posts, Konris Maynard said “King Ellie Matt, through his musical genius, has enshrined an immovable and unshakable legacy of Calypso Superiority in our Twin Isles. As a calypsonian myself, I tip my hat to a music colleague par excellence”.
Ellie Matt was a 10-time Calypso King and multiple time Road March King.. He was the leader of the renowned Ellie Matt and the GI’s Brass making him one of the Caribbean’s most celebrated musicians.
In a statement, the St. Kitts and Nevis Carnival said that Ellie Matt, was not only a remarkable musician but a beloved icon of Caribbean culture.
“King Ellie Matt’s prolific songwriting and arranging skills created timeless classics that have become well known anthems, bringing people together in joy and unity. His multiple road march victories reflect not just his artistry but his deep connection with the spirit of the people, celebrating life through each note and lyric.
“His legacy will continue to inspire future generations of musicians and fans alike.
Rest in peace, King Ellie Matt. Your extraordinary contributions to music and culture will never be forgotten,” the St. Kitts and Nevis Carnival added.
