The franchise Scary Movie is back in style. The sixth installment of the popular film parody saga is shaping up to achieve the best premiere of the entire series after collecting 24.7 million dollars in its first Friday at the US box office.
According to industry projections, Scary Movie 6 will end its opening weekend with approximately 56 million dollars, thus surpassing the record held by Scary Movie 4, whose premiere reached 49.7 million dollars in 2006.
The film also marks the return of the brothers Wayans to the franchise for the first time since Scary Movie 2 in 2001. Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans and Damon Wayans Jr. lead the cast, while Keenen Ivory Wayans and Craig Wayans participated in writing the script alongside Rick Alvarez.
Anna Faris and Regina Hall return to the saga
One of the biggest attractions for fans has been the return of Anna Faris and Regina Hallwho return to their iconic characters from Cindy Campbell and Brenda Meeks.
The cast also includes Kenan Thompson, Dave Sheridan, Lochlyn Munro, Carmen Electra, Kim Wayans, Cheri Oteri, Chris Elliott and Heidi Gardner.
Directed by Michael Tiddesthe film once again relies on parodies of great contemporary horror hits, including references to productions such as Scream, Get Out, M3GAN, Long Legs, Weapons, Sinners and other recent titles.
‘Masters of the Universe’ debuts in second place
Meanwhile, Masters of the Universefrom Amazon MGM Studios, ranked second at the US box office with 11.7 million dollars during his first Friday.
The adaptation starring Nicholas Galitzine as Prince Adam aims to gross around $30 million over the weekend, a modest figure considering that the production had a budget close to $200 million.
Directed by Travis Knight, the film also stars Idris Elba, Camila Mendes, Alison Brie and Jared Leto.
‘Backrooms’ continues to be one of the surprises of the year
In third place was Backrooms, the A24 horror film directed by Kane Parsons, who was barely 20 years old.
After its impressive premiere of 81.5 million dollars last week, the film added another 7.9 million during Friday and is projected to close the weekend with an additional $25 million.
