On Saturday, citizens of Ilulissat woke up without electricity in the city. It was due to a rockslide at the hydroelectric plant, says Nukissiorfiit. Nukissiorfiit is now working on getting spare parts sent to the hydropower plant.
Ilulissat stood without power on Saturday morning until Nukissiorfiit managed to supply the town with electricity via an emergency generator.
Now Nukissiorfiit reports on what was to blame for the power cut:
– The reason for the interruption of the power supply to the entire city of Ilulissat on Saturday 20 June 2026 was a rockslide at the Paakitsoq hydroelectric plant, which supplies Ilulissat with electricity, Nukissiorfiit writes on his website.
Spare parts sent to Paakitsoq
Facilities such as turbines and transmission masts are all fine, but the rockslide had hit and destroyed a high-voltage cable that supplies a smaller facility, causing the power outage in Ilulissat.
Nukissiorfiit explains that the emergency generator in the Paakitsoq hydroelectric plant is also damaged due to overloading after the rockslide. The emergency generator in Paakitsoq must be in operation for the hydroelectric plant to run again.
Nukissiorfiit expects that spare parts for the emergency generator in Paakitsoq can be shipped from Ilulissat during Monday afternoon.
Ilulissat is now supplied with electricity through a diesel generator at the emergency power plant in the city.
