Responsible adoption: How to prevent cats from returning to the shelter

Liepāja municipality’s animal shelter “Lauvas sirds” posted an emotional post on its Facebook account about the tendency of cats to be abandoned, which is difficult for a responsible and empathetic person to accept.

“Again and again we get calls from people looking for kittens – small, cute, ‘neat’, the kind that already go in a box and fit into a nice picture.

And then… after a couple of months, the same kitten comes back to us. Only not so small anymore. He’s already a teenager,” the shelter’s representatives describe the situation.

This time the story is about a case where someone was taken to a shelter kittybecause the family is going abroad. “We are leaving the country… we didn’t want to just throw it out on the street,” the family justifies bringing their cat to the shelter.

The staff of the shelter are, of course, happy that people did not throw the animal on the street, but the situation cannot be justified anyway, because the man who took it before cats, was a grown middle-aged man. “Mature enough to understand that an animal is not a short-term project.”

Because of such cases, the shelter staff ask to review their adoption options again and again and come up with different action plans, how to act in case something changes in life. It should not be a shelter.
