Qatar conducted secret negotiations with Iran during the war, offering to help shake up world energy markets in exchange for Tehran sparing its key Ras Laffan gas field, writes “The Washington Post“, referring to statements by American officials.
According to the report, Iran has not made a firm promise not to attack the facility that supplies a fifth of the world’s natural gas, but Qatar believed it could reach a tacit agreement.
Doha has reportedly offered to cut gas production, which would shake up global energy markets and put pressure on the United States and Israel. The work of the plant was indeed stopped on the third day of the war.
Intercepted communications
According to US officials cited by the newspaper, the CIA and senior officials from the Trump administration knew about the Qatari offer to Iran.
They found out the information after, as part of American surveillance operations, communications between Iranian leaders were intercepted.
As the “Washington Post” states, Iran attacked the plant in March. The attack destroyed parts of the facility and key infrastructure that accounts for 20 percent of its liquefied gas production, jeopardizing international contracts worth billions of dollars.
Trump: I don’t know if you heard, but today we ended the war with Iran
