Saturday’s murder of pregnant Jane Urbina in broad daylight at Hattieville’s bus stop was a “targeted” killing, police confirmed this morning. Investigators are now looking into whether the attack was connected to the murder case against her jailed brother, Police Constable Lionel Urbina, whom she had visited shortly before she was gunned down.
According to police, Urbina and her mother had travelled to the Belize Central Prison to visit former PC Urbina before returning to Hattieville to await transportation back to Santa Elena. Lionel Urbina is currently on remand awaiting trial for the 2025 murder of 19-year-old Belizean-American Kevin DePaz in Caye Caulker.
“It was a targeted attack,” said ACP Hilberto Romero, head of the National Crimes Investigation Branch. “They had information where she was at the time.”
ACP Romero told reporters, “Two persons on a motorcycle arrived at the area. One of them came off the motorcycle, approached her, and fired several shots towards her direction, causing her fatal injuries.”
According to Romero, “There were threats made to the police officer [Lionel] before he was charged for the murder.” He was unable to confirm whether the family had received threats as well.
The assailants were pursued and forced off the road about a quarter mile from the scene before abandoning the motorcycle and escaping into nearby bushes.
No arrests have been made. The two suspects remain at large, and police believe the suspects are from Belize City.
