Police are investigating the fatal shooting of a pregnant woman in Hattieville on Saturday afternoon.
The victim has since been identified as Jane Urbina of Santa Elena, Cayo. She died after being shot while waiting for transportation outside the village. Her unborn child also did not survive.
Urbina had visited her brother, Police Constable Lionel Rodolfo Urbina, at the Belize Central Prison shortly before the attack. The officer is currently on remand after being charged with the June 2025 murder of 19-year-old Kevin Matthew Depaz, who was fatally stabbed in Caye Caulker.
Urbina was at a bus stop preparing to return home when a gunman approached, opened fire and fled the area on a motorcycle.
While many theories of a motive are circulating on social media, the Belize Police Department has yet to confirm whether a motive has been established.
