President Santiago Peña announced that to define the readjustment of the minimum wage he will double the percentage of the Consumer Price Index (CPI), which this year was 2.4%. With this, the increase would be greater than G. 140,000, instead of G. 69,577.

“Today I want to announce that I have made the decision to increase the minimum wage above the inflation calculation”declared to the Colorados.
In this regard, he mentioned that inflation in the last year was 2.4%, a percentage that reflects “60,000 guaraníes”according to Peña.
“A number that is clearly very, very low for the working class, I have made the decision to double that amount; that the increase is 5%”, he alleged.
The current minimum wage reaches G. 2,899,048, and with the CPI readjustment (2.4%), it would increase only G. 69,577. With Peña’s announcement of increasing it by 5%, the readjustment would finally be G. 144,952.
If what was announced by the president is confirmed, the minimum wage would remain at G. 3,044,000.

“It is a balanced number,” says Peña.
Regarding his decision, Peña says he believes “that it is a balanced number and that does not put at risk macroeconomic stability”, which, in its opinion, Paraguay “Throughout Colorado governments he has been able to consolidate.”
“I am aware that this decision is no stranger to controversy. And we will know, president (in reference to Horacio Cartes), we will know from the Government to sit down and work and collaborate with the private sector, with the business class who will not agree with this decision.”he added during his speech.

Likewise, he maintained that the increase occurs by taking into consideration “broader aspects of economic development and social development”.
“We believe that our public policy has to focus on the worker, on the middle class Paraguayan, that it is very difficult for him to make ends meet and we cannot be insensitive to the demands and to the clamor of our working class,” he alleged, while at the same time confirming that “We will continue to support entrepreneurs.”
