“We urge the Public Ministry and the National Police to carry out a prompt, objective and impartial investigation that allows those responsible to be punished.. Likewise, we reaffirm our commitment to the defense of fundamental rights, justice and the strengthening of the rule of law,” the Ombudsman’s Office expressed in a statement.
Mayor Omar Díaz died after receiving a knife attack at the intersection of Jirón Marcelino Gonzales and Túpac Amaru Avenue, after having attended the celebrations for National Holidays and the patron saint’s day in the Plaza de Armas of Celendín.

Faced with this fact, which makes Díaz Rabanal the fourth mayor murdered in the country so far in 2026, the Ombudsman’s Office also expressed “its most energetic rejection” and extended “its most heartfelt condolences to his family, authorities and population.”
For its part, the National Police of Peru arrested Richard Leandro Araujo Ludeña (29), who remains in preventive custody for his alleged involvement in the homicide, while the Public Ministry collects evidence and testimonies in the crime area.
