PARAMARIBO — The Avond Vier Daagse offers a unique opportunity for social contact and strengthening mutual ties. Minister Lalinie Gopal of Youth Development and Sports underlined this on Wednesday, April 8, 2026 at the start of the 61st edition of this annual walking festival.
The minister had the honor of opening the event on behalf of President Jennifer Simons, in the presence of Minister André Misiekaba of Health, Welfare and Labor (VWA). This year’s AVD theme is “Keep moving, Stay balanced, Every step counts” and the supporting slogan “Nature is our Pharmacy”.
“Think of Suriname as your home. Don’t throw waste on the street – it’s a small effort with a big effect”
For four days, walkers come together to not only cover kilometers, but also show solidarity and perseverance. “People from different neighborhoods, backgrounds, countries and generations come together here. It is precisely this social connection that is invaluable. Schools, companies and individuals come together not only to walk, but also to show solidarity, discipline and perseverance,” said the minister.
Minister Misiekaba emphasized the health benefits of the event. “Health is more than the absence of disease. It is energy, balance and being active together. Walking lowers your blood pressure, strengthens your heart and connects us as a community. There is no pill that can do all that,” the minister added. According to him, the theme fits in perfectly with the growing attention for health and well-being. “Every step you take is a step toward healthier lives, a stronger community and a positive future for our country.”
This year, the AVD is once again supported by hundreds of volunteers, security services and organizations. Chairman Lakshmi Vishnudatt of the organizing Business Association Sports and Games (BVSS) reflected on the role of the participants as follows: “You are the heart of the event. With your commitment and enthusiasm you give these four days meaning.” She also pointed out the importance of exercise in daily life and called for a shared responsibility for a clean Suriname. “Think of Suriname as your home. Don’t throw waste on the street – it’s a small effort with a big effect.”
