Libya’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Taher Al-Sunni, has called for progress towards ending the country’s prolonged transitional phase.
Addressing the UN Security Council, he said recent understandings reached by a “4+4” committee on the electoral track shouldly be built upon, alongside reforms to the High National Elections Commission.
Al-Sunni said past efforts had shown that lasting solutions require agreement between Libyan institutions, stressing the importance of maintaining national ownership of the process.
He added that a successful political path depends on implementing workable electoral laws and establishing a constitutional basis to ensure credible elections, in line with UN resolutions.
However, the ambassador expressed reservations about parts of the UN-facilitated dialogue, saying some outcomes did not reflect all views and appeared to propose a new transitional phase without sufficient focus on holding direct elections or advancing the draft constitution.
He also questioned how disagreements — particularly on governance and women’s representation — would be resolved, and whether proposed measures could be implemented in practice.
At the same time, Al-Sunni welcomed the recently agreed roadmap by Libya’s three governing bodies as a step towards completing the legal framework needed for elections.
