Islamabad: Threatened against India Pakistan Minister Pakistan’s Climate Change Minister Musadik Malik has said that those who try to take the water share claimed by Pakistan in the Indus River Agreement will have their hands ‘cut off’. Following the Pahalgam terror attack in 2025, India had decided to suspend the decades-old agreement.
In a press conference, the minister accused India of controlling Pakistan’s waters. Pakistan will not allow anyone to interfere with water allocation. 40-50% of Pakistan’s population depends on agriculture for their livelihood. Those who try to eliminate water face serious consequences. The minister also asked how the water is blocked even after the agreement.
The Indus Water Treaty, signed by India and Pakistan in 1960 under the auspices of the World Bank, aims to maximize the use of water in the 6 rivers. According to this, India has the right to use the water of Ravi, Beas and Sutlej rivers in the east as much as possible. Similarly, Pakistan can also use the water of the western rivers like Indus, Jhelum and Chenab.
India has no right to build dams on the 3 western rivers. India claims that the 65-year-old agreement has expired and needs to be reviewed in light of new circumstances. They are not ready for this because the agreement is in favor of Pakistan. Pakistan uses 80 percent of the water.
