There heatwave in Europe is caused by the rise of extremely hot Saharan air masses. The latter first cross the south-east of the Morocco before continuing their progression towards the Mediterranean basin, where they affect a large part of southern and western Europe, explains the General Directorate of Meteorology.
THE European regions concerned are currently under the influence of a meteorological phenomenon called ” heat dome “. This is a powerful high pressure system that traps hot air near the ground, preventing its renewal and thus causing exceptionally high temperatures for several days.
Morocco on the fringes of the heat dome
Morocco Weather emphasizes, however, that the Morocco is located on the southern fringe of heat domewhich limits its direct impact on the Kingdom.
On the other hand, the southern provinces, the South-East and the Oriental remain exposed to the influence of warm Saharan air masses. In contrast, coastal regions benefit from the moderating effect of the Atlantic Oceanwhich helps maintain milder temperatures than in the interior of the country.
Over the next few days, the weather is expected to remain stable, with relatively warm temperatures to locally very hot, particularly in the South, the South-East, the Oriental as well as the interior plains.
This situation is explained, according to the DGM, by the persistence ofsubtropical anticyclonecombined with the strengthening of the Saharan thermal depression, favoring the arrival of warm, dry air masses on the national territory.
THE maximum temperatures should thus reach between 40 and 45°C in the South-East as well as the east and south of the Saharan provinces. They will oscillate between 32 and 37°C in the Oriental, the Moulouya valley, the Saïss, the interior of the Gharb, the phosphate and Oulmès plateaus, the plains of Tadla, the Rehamna, the Souss and the interior of the southern provinces.
In the other interior regions, the maximums will vary between 29 and 32°C, while the Atlas reliefs and areas close to the coast will record high temperatures. temperatures softer, between 20 and 24°C.

Localized thunderstorms and sandstorms
The DGM also plans the continuation of a certain atmospheric instabilityparticularly on the reliefs of the Atlas, the Oriental and the South-East. Cloudy developments could cause locally thundery showers during the afternoons and evenings.
Furthermore, moderate to fairly strong winds are expected in eastern and southern regions, with a risk of dust blowing in places.
Rising temperatures at the start of next week
Finally, the General Directorate of Meteorology indicates that a strengthening of the Saharan thermal depression is expected at the start of next week. This development should cause a significant rise in temperatures, with an extension of strong heat to a greater number of regions within the Kingdom.
